Nature flourishes all the year round in the unique subtropical climate of the Byron Bay Shire and Northern Rivers District. This means that your yard needs to be cared for differently through the summer and winter. And now as the seasons start to behave erratically, we must pay close attention to the varying needs of your lawn through the wet season and the dry season.
LAWN MOWING TIPS
Want to mow your lawn on your own? We love your enthusiasm, so here are some tips for the weekend warrior. The best time to cut and distress your grass by mowing it is around mid-morning. By this time, any dew and residual water has normally evaporated before the heat of the day has hit. Avoid putting off your mowing tasks for the noon or afternoon, if you expose the short lawn to intense heat and the sun, turf stress is likely to occur. Your grass won't respond well if you cut off more than 40% of its blade height each time you mow, and when it comes to frequency of mowing, it highly depends on the region you live in and the season. As a rule, residential area and acreage need mowing every two weeks in summer and every two to five weeks in winter.
If you have acreage or a large yard that needs attention, make sure you have a decent sized mower with a tight turning circle, so you can get into the small corners and pokey areas. Always do your edges before you mow anything as it will look neater afterwards and require less raking to pick up the cuttings.
Any time you go out to cut your own grass, don’t forget about self-protection. Always wear goggles, gloves, earmuffs and closed-toe shoes. As you can see, mowing is not rocket science, but there are some ticks of the trade involved. You just need to devote time, energy and invest in a good lawn mower and some protective clothing. If you have any questions about the best type of mower to buy, just give us a call, we are more than happy to help out with some advice.
